Intro
Ascraeus Mons is the tallest of the three major Tharsis volcanoes on Mars, and it's situated in the northern region. This colossal shield volcano stands at a towering height of 18 kilometers (11 miles), surpassing even Earth's tallest volcano, Mauna Kea, which is 10 kilometers tall when measured from its base below sea level. Ascraeus Mons features multiple calderas at its summit, where magma from underground sources erupts, flows down the volcano's slopes, and cools, forming flat surfaces. The presence of these calderas and associated tectonic faults creates a distinct caldera rim on Ascraeus Mons.
