Intro
Pavonis Mons is one of the three major Tharsis volcanoes on Mars, situated centrally between Ascraeus Mons to the north and Arsia Mons to the south. These volcanoes form a linear arrangement along a tectonic bulge caused by extensional forces in the region. Pavonis Mons, like its counterparts, is a shield volcano, characterized by its gradual slopes built up by layers of lava originating from the summit. The summit forms a caldera, created when the surface collapses into the emptied magma chamber below. Compared to the other Tharsis volcanoes, Pavonis Mons is the smallest, with a summit height of 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) and a width of 375 kilometers (233 miles).
