Intro
Rachmaninoff Basin on Mercury is a crater of high scientific interest. It was fully imaged during MESSENGER's third Mercury flyby and stands out due to its fresh appearance, unique reddish interior plains, and the presence of extensional troughs on its floor. This basin shares similarities in morphology with the younger Raditladi basin, and both are estimated to have formed relatively recently. Rachmaninoff features a central peak ring that is 130 kilometers in diameter and elongated in a north-south direction. The area within the peak ring is covered by bright reddish smooth plains, likely of volcanic origin, exhibiting signs of volcanic flow. Notably, the lowest recorded elevation on Mercury, lying 5380 meters below the global average, is found within Rachmaninoff Basin. This impact crater is named in honor of Sergei Rachmaninoff, the renowned Russian composer, pianist, and conductor (1873–1943).
