Intro
Sapas Mons is a massive volcano on Venus, located in the broad equatorial rise known as Atla Regio. It spans approximately 400 kilometers (248 miles) in diameter and rises 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) high. This volcano is known for its overlapping lava flows, with smoother, dark flows on one side and brighter flows near the center. It exhibits a unique feature where many lava flows originated from its flanks rather than the summit, similar to Hawaiian volcanoes on Earth. At its summit, there are two flat-topped mesas with smooth surfaces and nearby groups of pits, indicating the collapse of underground magma chambers. Sapas Mons, along with other volcanoes in the region, likely formed due to upwellings of molten rock from Venus's interior, similar to Earth's "hot spots." Magellan's synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has provided detailed mapping of this fascinating geological feature during its mission to explore Venus.
