The origin of Valles Marineris is still under investigation, but one leading theory suggests it began as a crack billions of years ago as Mars cooled. This colossal canyon exposes a multitude of geological layers, offering a glimpse into Mars' ancient history, including evidence of past water-related sedimentary deposits.
